NEWPORT, RI (May 9, 2017) – Newport Athletic Club (NAC) announced that its Share the Love campaign resulted in over $25,000 in donations to the Friends of David Leys, Jr. Fund. Proceeds will help to cover the cost of home care for the local Middletown resident, who has been battling ALS since the fall of 2012.
As part of its Share the Love campaign NAC hosted various events open to both members and non-members throughout February and March. Local cycling team, Team Leys, held a Spin-a-Thon hosted by Newport Athletic Club on Saturday, March 4th to raise much needed funds for their former teammate, David. Share the Love also included other activities such as a FIT-traxx demo week; a nutrition workshop; specialty group fitness classes; family fun night; Battle of the Trainers, and silent auction.
The Spin-a-Thon was attended by local cyclists, members of the community, friends and family of David’s and members of Newport Athletic Club. The participants rode indoor cycling bikes in 90-minute segments over 8 hours.
In addition to the tremendous participation in the Spin-a-Thon, the silent auction was also a great success. The silent auction featured donated items from local businesses including: weekend getaways at OceanCliff in Newport, RI, The Cove in Cape Cod, MA and The Village of Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH; four-course dinner for 12 prepared by a private chef in the winner’s home; and handmade quilts and signature baskets.
“We are so pleased to join with our community to support the Leys family,” said Kevin Buck, General Manager of Newport Athletic Club. “Our Spin-a-Thon included over 100 riders, and it was truly rewarding to see everyone come together to help out our former employee Dave and his family.”
To continue to support David and make a donation, checks can be sent to David Leys, Jr. 51 Ashurst Ave, Middletown, RI, 02842 or online at www.gofundme.com/daveleys.
